Joe Wieland (elbow) is aiming to begin a throwing program within the next few days.

Wieland has been on the disabled list (retroactively) since May 7 and should be ready to return shortly after he's eligible. The 22-year-old right-hander had a 4.55 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 24/9 K/BB ratio through his first 27 2/3 innings this season.

Brett Lawrie has been suspended four games for spiking his helmet at home plate umpire Bill Miller.

The incident happened Tuesday night after Miller made back-to-back questionable strike calls in the ninth inning of a one-run game. Lawrie is appealing and is in Toronto's starting lineup Wednesday night against the Yankees. He's unlikely to have the punishment reduced given how bad the scene looked. Lawrie was also fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball.

Michael Morse (lat) made 60 throws Wednesday.

It was the first time Morse had picked up a baseball in several weeks. "I haven't been throwing, so it was kind of like a monkey riding a bike," he told reporters after the workout. Morse is aiming to make his 2012 regular-season debut in early June.

A second MRI taken Wednesday on Cory Luebke's left elbow confirmed a partial ligament tear.

Luebke is currently deciding between surgery and rehab but seems likely to ultimately go under the knife. Tommy John surgery would sideline him through May of 2013.

Wilson Ramos said Wednesday that he expects to undergo surgery to repair his torn right ACL in 2-3 weeks.

Ramos also confirmed to reporters that he has no chance of returning this season. Jesus Flores has taken over as the Nationals' starting catcher and deserves to be owned in mixed fantasy leagues with spots for two backstops. Ramos batted .265/.354/.398 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 25 games this season.

Athletics optioned RHP Andrew Carignan to Triple-A Sacramento.

Carignan has allowed five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings this season in the major leagues. He was given the boot Wednesday to clear a roster spot for Travis Blackley.

Ivan Nova (foot, ankle) is scheduled to throw a side session Thursday morning in Toronto.

If it doesn't go well, Nova will likely be scratched from his next scheduled start. He made an early exit from his outing Monday against the Orioles after suffering a contusion and sprain of his right foot and ankle.
May 16 - 4:25 PM

Yunel Escobar is not in Wednesday's starting lineup.

It's a scheduled day of rest for Escobar. Omar Vizquel will start at shortstop against the Yankees.
